Reebok’s advert used 50 Cent as their selling point; the advert begins with medium shot of stereotypical American black neighbour hood, this connotes with the past life of 50 Cent. A shot of a telephone line with a pair of shoes tied together, hanging of the telephone line is shown; which represents a murder of a gang member at the place. This links with the stereotypical view of typical thug on the American hood also the link with 50 Cent’s past life. There is glance of a red paddle with connotes a violence and blood; also there is a gun shot sound (non-diegetic sound). This follows with 50 Cent’s head bow down with a news broadcast of a gun shooting. That follows the mentioning of 50 Cent’s 9 times gun shot experience as a count down also a non-diegetic sound. Finally the broadcasting presenter asks 50 Cent; “who you plan to massacre next?” which follows with 50 Cent grinning to the question.
To enhance the atmosphere the advert uses sounds to manipulate the audience or indicate the links with focus point. Such as the non-diegetic sound of the gun shot and the shot of 50 Cent’s head bowing down this reflects on 50 Cent’s past life. Also the radio news broadcast of gun shooting with the count down from 9 to 1 links with 50 Cent’s life experience with gun shooting.
The reason maybe Reebok would glamorise violence so their could make a link with most of the public of America; which lead to the increase of sales of their products due to the advert of linking products and a famous self made wealthy being (50 Cent.
I think that this advert should be banned so there would no bad influence in the American public of the way of reach to a wealthy status such as 50 Cent. The reason it should be banned is sue to the message I personally received from the advert which would be the same for many people watching the advert.
